Translation of S. Edward, King and Martyr. Edward was the eldest son of King Edgar the Peaceful. He was murdered in March 978 in Corte Castle, for his defence of the Benedictine Monasteries, which were being looted by many of the nobles jealous of the lands granted them by his father. Early in 979 he was buried in Shaftesbury Abbey, but in 1007, his remains were moved (translated) to a more prominent position within the abbey – he was already reckoned to be a saint.
