St Michael and All Angels Sung Mass

September 29 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Originally the first of S. Michael the Archangel, the day of dedication of the Roman Basilica of S. Michael. Archbishop Cranmer added ‘and all Angels’ in the BCP, and the Roman revisers of 1969 added ‘and Ss Gabriel and Raphael’.

It was upon this day, 20 years ago, that the Consistory Court of the Archdiocese of York sat here (with the Chancellor seated on the Chancel step, framed by the screen) and pronounced in his judgement that the statue of Our Lady at the screen was a Shrine to Our Lady of North Street, and noted that the Church was referred to as a “A Shrine Church”. In a latter case, the judgement permitting the re-ordering of The Lady Chapel, the new Chancellor referred to this case, and stated then that “no one objected to The Statue by the Screen being a Shrine then, so no one can object now!” This is apparently the only reference to a Shrine in a consistory court case in the Church of England. How apt that it should be the place of the best documented visions of Our Lady in medieval England.
