York Festival of Ideas: Discovering York’s Historic Churches

June 1, 2024 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Church buildings are amongst the most fascinating and revealing of heritage sites. York is particularly well served for historic churches, with many places of worship remaining in use on the same site for many centuries and retaining their original features. In this walking tour, our expert guide Anna Hughes will introduce some of York’s most historic churches including Holy Trinity Goodramgate and All Saints North Street. Anna will be taking a look at the history of each building and help you to spot the features which reveal more about its past. The tour will be relaxed, with plenty of time for questions and a break for refreshments at All Saints North Street. Suitable for both the simply curious and experienced churchcrawlers.

Part of the York Festival of Ideas. Free, but donations welcome. Booking is required.

Following this tour, Dr Patricia Cullum will be talking about her new research into the East Window at Holy Trinity Goodramgate at 4pm on 1st June. Attendees are very welcome to attend both events to deepen their knowledge of this fascinating church. Please email york@thecct.org.uk if you would like to attend Pat’s talk in addition to the tour.

Accessibility Info

Holy Trinity Goodramgate is wheelchair accessible except for the Sunken Chapel. Entry to the site is easiest via Hornpot Lane. Please note that the floors are uneven throughout and lighting levels may be low since the interior is lit only by daylight and candlelight. Since the building is over 800 years old, the temperature inside is often much cooler than the temperature outside. There is a single toilet, but this is only wheelchair accessible from the outside of the building.

All Saints North Street is wheelchair accessible except for the chancel, high altar, and anchorhold (open for special events only) though some floors are uneven due to the historic nature of the building. An accessible toilet is available during events. The church is usually quiet and peaceful, though there may be some noise during services, events, larger tours or building works. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be available at this stop of the tour.

If you have any questions, please email york@thecct.org.uk (re Holy Trinity, Goodramgate) or engagement.allsaintsnorth@gmail.com (re All Saints North Street)
