The York Gradual
The complete music for the Mass in pre-Reformation northern England (the Use of York)
Beautiful meditative plainchant which would have been lost for ever but for the amazing survival of just one single copy. This unique survivor was the music book of St Peter’s church in the tiny Nottinghamshire village of East Drayton in the early 15th century.
Hand-written on parchment 600 years ago, the book is our only source for the music sung at worship in every parish church in the whole of the north of England. Now published for the first time, complete with historical introduction and critical notes, it has the Latin originals and their English translations all set to the original plainchant. Printed in three parts because of its size.
